To help hands and nails in becoming healthier, fellow these simple steps on a weekly basis to keep them that way:

1. Remove any nail polish use a acetone-free polish remove. Acetone strips nail of its natural oils, making them dull and dry. Stroke the nail from the base to the tip with the cotton ball to discourage polish and remover from settling underneath the cuticle.

2. Filing may be the most fundamental part of a manicure. Improper filing can contribute to splitting nails. Move an emery board at a 45 degree angle from the side to the center of your nail. Back and forth filing dries out the nail and can crack cause peeling. Shape is a personal preference. Rounded nails or nails shaped straight across the tops with rounded or squared corners are less likely to split.

3. Massage a rich cream into your cuticle. If you have damage cuticle use a alpha hydroxy cream. If fungus or infection is present use a blend of Tea tree oil and lavender oil.

4. Gently push back cuticles with your fingertips. Use an orange stick wrapped with cotton to remove dead cuticle skin and to clean under fingernails. Avoid cutting cuticles; cutting can lead to infection and clipped cuticles often grow back thicker

5. Now massage the hands well with a natural hand lotion that contains peppermint or spearmint oil (or you can add ten drops to 8oz. hand cream). Start at your fingertips and massage toward your wrist and up to your elbows. Always with a upward motion. This can help blood flow for healthier and younger - looking hands.

6. For dry hands, treat hands and nails to a hot essential oil soak. Heat jojoba oil (warm to touch) with two to three drops of rosemary oil and soak hands and nails for ten minutes. The heat aids absorption of the jojoba oil and healing essential oil. For really dry skin and dry, splitting nails, put on gloves after the hot oil treatment (do not rinse) and leave them for ten minutes or overnight for best results.

7. Instead of applying nail polish, try buffing as a nice, natural alternative. It stimulates circulation, leaves a glossy shine on your nails and lets the natural pink color of your nails show through. Apply a buffing cream or paste to nails and buff across the top of the nails in one direction. Buffing also can accelerate nail growth. Nail polish contains some of the strongest, most toxic chemicals on earth. Its ingredients of chemicals and acetone can strip nails of natural oils, make them dull and dry, and leaves behind a yellow or orange tinge. Discolored nails may also result from nicotine, prolonged illness, allergies, diabetes or stress. If nail polishing is a must, try buffing between nail polishing. How to grow strong, healthy nails?
How much milk do you drink on average? Actually, how much calcium do you consume on average?

You can try all the nail strengthening items you want, but if you want a more natural, and possibly, healthier approach, calcium is your ticket. Nail polish of any kind will inhibit nail growth because it prevents oxygen from getting an and allowing your nails to breath, which they need to in order to grow and be healthy.

Calcium is not just to strengthen your bones and just to drink so your body can grow as you grow up, it's also for your nails and other things. If you drink more soda/sugary items a day than milk, that is probably a big part as to why your nails don't grow. If you use your hands on a daily basis, such as in art, work, etc., then your nails will have a better chance of breaking than someone who doesn't use their hands all that much. Still, calcium is the better option.

I drink on an average of at least 5 glasses of milk a day, if not more, and throw in cheese every now and then (when I feel like eating it). My nails grow like weeds and rarely break.

Bottom line, drink a lot of milk and eat a healthy amount of calcium period. Milk is just easier. Take a cheese sandwich for lunch everyday, or have a grilled cheese. Anything to do with calcium. Dairy products, yogurt.

Protein rich foods will also help. Eat a good amount of fruits and vegetables at the same time. Put lotion rich in vitamins on your hands as well.

Do all of these things and you should see your nails become stronger.
Try this - I use it all the time as I had exactly the same problem - it works miracles!
